What Our Students Say

“At LCS, I notice that I want to go to school more, and I feel more energized throughout the day. I do better in my classes, so I enjoy school now. We learn about topics I am very passionate about, and everything is up for discussion. I really like that I can express my ideas without being shut down, I like getting feedback on what I say, and I feel heard.
It’s a very caring, friendly, open environment here. I was able to talk to my teachers when my dad passed away, they really listened to me, and this helped me a lot. At my last school I only had one friend, but at LCS it was really quick and easy for me to make friends. I was welcomed into this community when I joined.

David, Grade 12

Leila, Grade 10

When you come to LCS, you will receive a warm, loud welcome from a community who is really kind to new people. People came up to talk to me, and I kept seeing the same small group of other students in all of my classes. I really liked LCS from that first day, it feels open. There is a lot of freedom at LCS. I am free to be myself and to share my feelings without being judged. I am trusted to take care of my own needs and, as long as I communicate with teachers, I am given a lot of flexibility to do what is right for me.

Adam, Grade 12

“At LCS, I get the academic support I need, and the teachers work with me one-on-one whenever I need help. Everyone here is nice, no one makes fun of me if I don't understand what we are learning, my classmates even help explain the material to me. There are so many opportunities to make things with my hands here, the craft studio and workshop are always open, and I am able to be tactile in my learning. My mood is better every day, I am happy to be here.”

Jake, Grade 11

"There are so few students, and they are all so different, it‘s hard not to be friends with others. I like the small classes. They feel more personalized. Teachers dedicate time to each student, and they actively try to build relationships and get to know us. When I come to a teacher with a problem, they will do everything in their power to help me fix it.

"It is really nice being with my siblings at school, we don’t have to worry about each other because we trust the teachers to really help and care. I’m not a very social person, but At LCS I am comfortable, and I know no one is going to judge me. I have always done really well academically and at LCS I ask for extra credit work a lot of times. There is a lot of choice and opportunities to be artistic here.

Sabrina, Grade 12

Aria, Grade 12

“At all my other schools before LCS, I felt disconnected from everyone else - I had no friends, and I felt like I was a ghost. I struggled to read facial expressions and didn't understand body language or tone of voice. I could understand my own emotions, but I couldn't read other people's emotions. I had to monitor the way I spoke, the voice I used, I had to make sure I didn't do things that other people might misunderstand. LCS is inclusive of everyone. I feel comfortable being me - it is the most connected I have ever felt in my life. I have learned social skills and gained confidence at LCS. I feel comfortable in my own skin, and I don't feel pressured to communicate in the way everyone else does. I don't have to make uncomfortable eye contact with people constantly, and I can speak freely about my interests without worrying about people shutting me down.

Christian, Grade 12

“At my first high school I was stressed and overwhelmed all the time. There was too much work, school started too early in the day, and I just couldn’t keep up. Once I came here, my life got easier. I can keep up with the work and I am interested in what we are learning. Doing hands-on projects and connecting one on one with my teachers motivates me - I feel comfortable talking to teachers and students here.

Neveah, Grade 9

I came to LCS to get a better education. The teachers here are interactive and kind, I laugh a lot during class because the way we are learning is so fun. I also enjoy all the artwork around the school, it's clear that lots of hard work has been put into having it be colorful and welcoming here, effort has been given to make the school a comforting and kind space. I feel happy here, I'm always excited for a new day, and my parents are happy that I'm happy. The breakfast and lunch is great too, it is the best school food I’ve had!

“When I started high school, things didn’t go as I thought they would. I felt misunderstood and like no one was listening to me about what I needed. I did not feel socially accepted, I didn’t know how I would ever get to graduation. At LCS, I formed meaningful connections with my teachers, and I opened up, I didn’t have to hide who I was.

Kenia, Grade 12

Luke, Grade 12

"At my old school I was so unhappy, I couldn’t learn the same way everyone else did. I had so much anger and didn’t know what to do with it. Coming to a new place was scary at first and it took me a while to realize I needed to change if I wanted a good life. I’m not angry anymore, It’s chill here. This school is amazing and its a lot easier to learn. I love the freedom, I am allowed to draw in class as long as I’m listening. My teachers have seen me change a little bit day after day and they have been there for me through it all, they have faith in me. I am a whole new person now, my attitude has changed completely. I take responsibility for my actions now and speak to my teachers respectfully. In a way, this school is my family.”

Gabby, Grade 12

“I am an artist and I have been given the freedom to boldly express my extravagant art style at LCS - painting murals on the walls and using art to express my opinions in History and English classes. This is a safe space to share your opinions and to be creative. My teachers have taught me how to trust people, I have really close relationships with them. They have helped me learn how to communicate my feelings and guided me to be a better person. They encourage me to go after what I want, and to be more vocal about my needs."

Willow, Grade 11

“School has never been hard for me, earning good grades was always easy. My anxiety was through the roof at my last school, though, and I cried all the time when I was there. The classes here are so cool, I am really learning, really thinking. When I’m on my way to class with a teacher I like, I can’t wait to see what we will learn. The work is just challenging enough - it is hard, but I don’t get stressed out by it.”
